Gigante Bay Tienda

After spending three months touring around
different islands in Nicaragua, I felt like I was ready to explore a different part of the country, so I decided to head back to the Pacific Ocean. S
everal people had lovely things to say about Playa Gigante, so I decided to see for myself by making my way to this sweet fisherman's village.

The locals said that there were many places to stay, but I ended up making my way down to the end of the village, to El Camino Gigante.

As I was waiting at reception I noticed it was located in a lovely 'tienda' with several types of handicrafts. The right corner of the room immediately caught my eye, because that's where all the good clay works were. I was later told that they were all handmade by women from close-by San Juan del Sur. There was everything from plates and cups to little ashtrays and knick knacks; and it was clear that everything there was intricately worked and well designed. I was surprised to see such high quality items and was tempted to buy the whole shelf so I could keep everything for myself, (or MAYBE give away as presents for friends and family back home).

After I got my bed in the dorm, I noticed the
lockers for tourists to store their things in. Since I didn’t have a lock (and my sun block was almost gone) I went straight back to the tienda where I could easily get the items I needed, which was a relief. Gigante Bay is a little isolated, so I really appreciated the convenience of having everything I needed right there.

Three days later, I decided to extend my stay at Gigante Bay and work as a volunteer with my main focus (of course) being to help organize the shop. For the next three weeks I spent my days filling up coconut-oil, re-arranging displays, talking to the owner, and thinking about useful equipment we could sell. We started sourcing out things like snorkeling-sets, organic/local coffee, condoms, and sprays. And then we also decorated the space with some artwork to make it even nicer. Later I was given the task of adding some artistic flair to a table in front of the shop, right next to our big adobe-oven, so that people passing by might feel more invited to stop, and come in.

And hopefully we achieved exactly that. Because in addition to the things I already listed the shop has handmade shooters, funny masks, little toyswood-based materials, smoking-accessories (like pipes, papers and bongs), walletshammocks, hand-made bags, up-cycled shirts and lots of art work. Literally something for everyone.

I hope you can stop by and enjoy your time in the shop as much as I did. And don't forget to let us know what you think!

Yours,

Sepa G.

An extreme fishing expedition!

Tin Tin is a 27foot Super Panga nic named El Tibarone [the shark]. Casted in Granada and put together by long time fisherman and Captain Rob Plath from Florida this Panga is set up to catch fish.  Outfitted with all the latest gear and safety devices Colorline charters offers the realest of fishing experiences.  Heading west into the big Pacific’s horizon in search of the color lines is where we start. Blues, greens with turquoise and café is one of the many indicators we use to track down the fish of the season.  Spotting for Dolphins and Turtles we do our parts to maintain stability in our local eco systems to ensure a pristine future. Here at Colorline Charters we are in compliance with Bill Fish Foundation regulations and practice the catch and release of Billfish with all circle hooks. We are expanding into the tagging programs to locate, track and log the fish we catch together. We also spot cast for some of the biggest Rooster fish in the world for that loaded bonus. So always remember you’ll keep tight lines and screamin drags here with us at Colorline charters.

    Rappelling

Rappelling the 90 meter Gigante foot is a thrill not be missed. Our California climber certified staff safely attaches you to a inverted decent over the water and jagged coast line. The brisk hike to the top is both invigorating and refreshing, with a view from Popoyo to Costa Rica. There are some smaller rappels for the less daring (but also less exciting!). No group is too big or too small, we can always go for an adventure ... and if you're feeling real daring, then you can try out our night rappel.

    Horse riding

Natural Horsemanship has found its way to Playa Gigante! Our seasoned horsetrainers and guides are offering tours, lessons, and natural horsemanship instruction - an approach to training based on the body language of horses observed in the wild. It is an ideology that focuses on developing a relationship based on trust and respect, and with its burgeoning success, it has spread around the world as the leading methodology of true horsemanship. Now, Nicaragua can claim host to its first Natural Horsemanship program. If you’re looking for an adventure, here is an opportunity to see the village of Gigante, its neighboring beaches, and the surrounding jungle from a different perspective - tall in the saddle during an immaculate beachside sunset. With tours taking you into the jungle through winding riverbeds and local footpaths, you’ll learn more about the coastal climate, its flora and fauna, and the wildlife that call these forests home, all while developing a relationship with your horse the way natural horsemen have done for centuries. Whether you’re sharing a romantic evening or reviving your cowboy spirit, there is no better way to watch the sunset than wading through the surf on horseback.

    captains-forecast
Welcome to Playa Gigante's high season and the beginning of the festivities. December here at Gigante Bay brings in the busy season and the winds, as well as some gentle waves, perfect for beginners. Those offshores are incredibly strong, but at least the rain has tapered off. We’ve got different fish occupying our waters. The fishing charters have started coming ashore with mackerel, as the dorado's are bidding their farewell. This Saturday night we have the Full Moon Party, so get ready for a night of extremity with DJ's taking over the Crobar and not a spare bed in the house. The people have started arriving, and we're offering non-stop rappelling, horse riding tours and fishing tours, and don’t forget $10 Tuesday's Sunset Sails. This place is more alive now than ever.
